Bias in resulting estimate ofdistnibution

چکیده

It is perhaps more surprising that any method of estimating the time of infection by a single time point will result in the estimation of a biased distribution of incubation time. The exact resulting perturbation of the distribution is difficult to predict but plainly, for example, the variance will be overestimated, as the times subject to analysis will have one variance component in themselves (the natural variability of incubation times) and one additional variance component from the estimation of the time of infection. This second source of variance must of necessity be greater than zero, as the true times of infection are unknown. Taylor et al tried to correct for this effect,'7 but we believe that the resulting distribution remains biased. We do not, however, know of any other method of correction.

The Relative Improvement of Bias Reduction in Density Estimator Using Geometric Extrapolated Kernel

One of a nonparametric procedures used to estimate densities is kernel method. In this paper, in order to reduce bias of  kernel density estimation, methods such as usual kernel(UK), geometric extrapolation usual kernel(GEUK), a bias reduction kernel(BRK) and a geometric extrapolation bias reduction kernel(GEBRK) are introduced. Theoretical properties, including the selection of smoothness para...

Inflation Bias, Time Inconsistency of Monetary and Fiscal Policies and Institutional Quality

In developing countries, weak institutional quality can increase the probability of applying discretionary policies and can have a great impact on their double-digit inflation. Surico (2008) calculated inflation bias, but he considered just monetary policy and he did not pay attention to the institutions. Therefore, we design a model which considers the discretion in monetary and fiscal policie...

A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Cognitive Bias Modification in Real and Placebo Conditions on Attentional Bias and Approach Bias in Opium Abusers

Background & Aim: Inability to control drug use is considered a core aspect of drug dependency. Part of this inability is due to cognitive biases resulting from individuals’ constant usage of drugs. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of cognitive bias modification in real and placebo conditions on attentional bias and approach bias in opium abusers. Methods: This stud...

On the Maximum Bias Functions of Mm-estimates and Constrained M-estimates of Regression

We derive the maximum bias functions of the MM -estimates and the constrained M -estimates or CM -estimates of regression and compare them to the maximum bias functions of the S -estimates and the τ -estimates of regression. In these comparisons, the CM -estimates tend to exhibit the most favorable bias-robustness properties. Also, under the Gaussian model, it is shown how one can construct a C...

Investigation of the Allometric Models in Estimation of Poplar (Populus deltoides) Height

One of the most important issues in forest biometrics is the use of allometric functions to estimate the tree height by using diameter-height models. Measuring the total height of trees is usually a complex and time-consuming process. In allometric functions, the diameter is measured directly but the height of the tree is an estimate of an allometric model, which will be more accurate if the cr...
